Negotiating salary can be tough and nerve-wracking, but when done properly it can make a big difference towards getting what you want in your career and your life outside of work. Negotiating Salary: 3 Things to Consider

  1. Know What You’re Worth

Before you have the salary talk with your boss or hiring manager, make sure you do your research about comparable jobs in your field to get a sense of what you’re worth. You should know the high end and low end of this scale. Be prepared to let the decision maker know where you got your information if they ask where your figures came from.

  1. Be Open

When it comes time to negotiate, remember that this is a human interaction much like an interview. Be open and honest with the hiring manager or boss, and they are likely to open up to you. Voice all concerns up front, share your goals and priorities and ask questions. If you are honest and likeable, you are more likely to get what you want.

  1. Consider Other Options

Negotiating your salary doesn’t just end with your net pay. There are other variables to consider when deciding what compensation is fair. Benefit packages, health insurance, stock options and vacation time are all items to factor into your annual salary.

Not negotiating salary can make the difference of up to $1 million over the course of your career. Start earning what you’re worth by negotiating your salary properly.
