Motivating Your Team: 3 Tips for Unproductive Employees

March 17th, 2015

Offices are comprised of many different employees, from the actively engaged to the outright unmotivated. Motivating employees comes in many different forms and employing various approaches works to establish loyalty and commitment from workers.

Why Are Employees Unproductive?

There are many reasons for a worker to become disengaged and unproductive on the job. Some reasons include a lack of career opportunities or upward mobility, low enthusiasm, lack of communication or an employee may feel they don’t make an impact on the company. Here are 3 tips for motivating unproductive employees.

3 Tips for Motivating Unproductive Employees

  1. Determine Goals

Speak with your employee in private and ask them what their goals and aspirations are for their career. This can be done in a formal performance review, but is also okay to bring up at any point in their employment to encourage open communication. Ask for two types of goals: short-term and long-term. This will help you determine how to motivate them on a daily basis and also keep career opportunities in front of them.

  1. Offer Training

One of the barriers to employees’ productivity may be lack of knowledge or confusion about their duties. Offer refresher workshops or hold Q&A training sessions to help clarify job responsibilities and catch your unproductive employees’ attention.

  1. Establish Rewards

Rewards help show employees their hard work is appreciated. By establishing a reward system for a job well done, unproductive employees may be motivated to put in extra effort. There are monetary and non-monetary rewards, each with their own pros and cons.

Determining goals, offering training and rewarding good performance are all ways of motivating unproductive employees. Employment and communication is a two-way street. If you have tried to motivate your team and notice no change in your unproductive employees, consider hiring a more talented worker.
