How will you make a good first impression at work?

The first week of work at a new job is often the roughest, scariest and most exciting time. Though you’re probably nervous and finding your bearings, it is important to make an excellent first impression.

Here are a few tips from Fortune to help you become an outstanding member of your workplace right away.

  1. Be Confident

Though you may not be 100 percent sure of what you are doing, project confidence in your work. It is important that your employer and co-workers see that you work well under pressure and can handle responsibilities. This will serve you well down the road when they offer you additional tasks and work.

  1. Be Prompt… Or Even Early

It may seem like a small detail, but showing up on time or even early can instill confidence in your abilities by your employer; being late, on the other hand, would make a bad first impression. As Fortune notes, “No one wants to see you running through the front door two minutes before you are supposed to start on your first day. It will also give you time to settle in and breathe a bit before meeting your new coworkers.”

  1. Connect with Co-Workers

Fortune recommends starting off a conversation with a new co-worker with two questions:

  • Where are you from?
  • How long have you been with the company?

These questions are great non-invasive ways to spark a conversation and show interest in someone else; plus they’ll have the opportunity to talk about themselves and give you a chance to take a few relaxing breaths.
