  • Properly Prepare Yourself: Sometimes managers delay giving regular feedbackto their team members because they are unsure how to start the process or hold a formal review. The best way to prepare yourself is to determine your objective for the evaluation. Is it a regular annual review, or are you assessing the success of a big project? Focus on these areas: how does the employee communicate with other workers and supervisors, are they completing basic job duties and can they be more accountable in the future?
  • Let Employees do the Talking: Are you taking up most of the conversation, or are you letting your workers do the talking during performance reviews? Have your team member fill out a self-review form before the review, so you can see how they choose to evaluate themselves. This can illuminate areas that need improvement, and make them feel more engaged and in control of the process.
  • Give Employees Clear Guidance: Use performance reviews as an opportunity to give your employees additional guidance and support by using the evaluation to provide constructive criticism. Make sure your expectations are clear; workers who are given explicit instructions are more likely to produce quality work and stay engaged.

How engaged and invested are your team members in their jobs? While there isn’t a secret sauce for workplace employee engagement, there are several tried and true tactics. Read on for a look at what factors drive positive employee engagement, and several ways your office’s engagement could improve.

  1. An Opportunity for Team Building

Try to include some fun in your workplace in the form of creating scenarios where your workers can bond with one another. How can you make sure your team building efforts are successful? All well-planned, motivating team building activities have a few things in common:

  1. A Well-Defined Goal:Team building events should have a purpose. Are you training your workers for a new project or promotion? Are you trying to increase group morale? Determine what your goal
  2. An Organized Activity:The event should be planned well in advance and have a designated leader, whether it is a manager, HR rep or company CEO. Activities can last for an hour, a day or even a weekend.
  3. Measureable Results:The activity should have a measureable impact on your company; this ties into the goal of the event. A good way to gauge the responses of your workers is to hold an employee engagement survey each year, or have them answer reflection questions after the team building activity.

    2. One-On-One Time with Managers

Are you accessible to your team members? Instead of just telling them to “do this” or “do that,” treat them as a partner. Listen to their ideas and feedback, give them the freedom to decide how they’ll do their job, and treat each and every one of them as an important member of the team.

Regular feedback in the form of employee reviews is helpful for encouraging your workers to succeed, but how often do you ask for their opinions on the workplace? An employee engagement survey can help! The following questions are great for assessing the needs of your team, determining their employee satisfaction and coming up with great new ideas to keep them engaged:

  • Do you have the tools to do your job effectively? Why or why not?
  • Do you feel like there are more days you want to come to work than the days you don’t want to?
  • Choose a couple of words that you feel describe your state of mind when you come to work.

  1. Showing Gratitude to Team Members

Showing a little appreciation goes a long way in encouraging your employees to be invested in their jobs. Letting your workers know they’re valuable is a great way to increase employee engagement! Whenever you notice them doing something well, sincerely thank them in front of your whole team or write a quick email letting them know you noticed and appreciate their contributions.

  1. Offer Unique Incentives

Not all incentives are monetary; sometimes something as simple as offering healthy snacks at work can change your team members’ attitudes toward being in the office. A study conducted by Staples found at least half of all office workers left to purchase snacks at least once per workday, while some people ventured out to find food almost five times per day. All of this adds up to lost productivity and interrupts your attempts to form a cohesive team. By offering free office snacks, workers who otherwise would have left instead opt to stay at work. This can make them more productive and engaged in the office.
