3 Questions Interviewers Can (and Can’t!) Ask You

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your rights to secure a job. When it comes to interviewing, most people see it as a one-sided conversation. Interviews, in fact, are a give-and-take between you and your potential employer. Many times, interviewees will answer anything the interviewer asks them, even if the question is illegal. Here is a guide to what questions interviewers can and cannot ask potential applicants.

3 Questions Interviewers Can Ask You

  1. About Physical Requirements or Limitations

An interviewer may ask if you can stand/sit for a certain period of time or if you can lift a certain quantity of weight essential to the job function. Even if you have disclosed a disability, they may still ask this question but they may not ask about health status or illnesses.

  1. Legal Convictions

Crimes you have been convicted of are public record, so you don’t want to be caught in a lie. Interviewers are allowed to ask if you have been convicted of specific crimes, but they are not allowed to ask loaded or incriminating questions such as “Have you ever been arrested?”

  1. Travel and Overtime

Interviewers may not ask candidates, specifically women, if they have family obligations that would stop them from work travel and overtime. Instead, employers may ask how the employee feels about travel requirements and if they are alright with long hours.

3 Questions Interviewers Can’t Ask You

  1. Your Gender or Family Status

Employers are not permitted to ask questions about your gender or if applicable, questions about a gender transition. As innocent a question as it may seem, they are also not allowed to ask you if you are married, single or have children. It is illegal to make hiring decisions based on family or marital status, so there is no reason these types of questions should come up in an interview.

  1. Residency

Questions about whether or not you are a U.S. citizen, or how long you have resided in the U.S. are off-limits. Interviewers are also not allowed to ask you questions about where you are currently living, such as how long you commute is or if you live nearby. This is considered personal information until a job offer is made, and could allow for discrimination against candidates who live farther than others.

  1. Clubs or Associations

Asking interviewees which clubs and associations they are a part of is not allowed. This can open the interviewee up to religious discrimination. Employers also can’t ask which holidays you celebrate or if you attend any religious ceremonies.

The 5 Most Common Interview Questions and Answers – Part 1

You’ve carefully written your resume, sent a thoughtful cover letter and passed through the screening process. The job search can be overwhelming, so when the call comes granting an interview, candidates often feel as if they’ve nailed the hardest part. However, there are several common interview questions you should prepare yourself to answer. Depending on the field you are seeking a career in, answers may differ, but we’ll share the 5 most common interview questions and why it’s important to be prepared with an answer. Here are the first three, and in our next post we’ll cover the last two basic interview questions you may face.

5 Basic Interview Questions

  1. Tell me about yourself.

This may be the first of the basic interview questions an employer asks you and it’s important to have a confident answer prepared. The employer asks this question to see if your skills are a good match for the company. Use it to start off strong and show that you are a candidate who aligns very closely with the job description.

Sample Answer: “I am a team-player who is motivated by deadlines. I have x amount of years in this industry in which I have built multiple contacts and relationships. I am constantly looking for new responsibilities to take on and I love to lead new projects.”

  1. What interests you about this job?

Interview questions like this may seem obvious, but candidates who apply to many jobs in the same field should familiarize themselves with why the job you’re interviewing for is different. Employers like to hear why you chose them out of hundreds of companies and this makes them all the more likely to want to choose you.

Sample Answer: “I have lots of experience in this field. I am interested in bringing my talents to your company because I feel that its values are very closely aligned with mine. I have heard great things about the environment of your workplace and I love that you are a family-owned business.”

  1. Tell me about a failure you’ve had at work.

While it may sound negative, employers ask basic interview questions like this to find out how quickly you can think on your feet. Most people have lots of professional stories to tell about their successes, but you may be afraid to tell a potential employer that you may have failed one time or another. By highlighting a time when you didn’t do your best, you can use this as an opportunity to show them how you can change a failure into a success.

Sample Answer: “I missed a meeting because I didn’t give thought to the time zone difference and my client wasn’t happy. I learned from this and always make sure to double-check times and locations to make sure I don’t make this mistake again.”

These most common interview questions and answers may seem hard, but don’t be afraid! Questions like these are called behavioral interview questions and they are designed so the interviewer can get to know who you are and whether you’ll be a great fit for their company.

5 Non-Traditional Interview Questions That Can Help You Select the Right Candidate

Selecting the right candidate for a job opening can be tricky, especially if there are several great candidates available, yet choosing the right person for a job is critical to your company’s success. While there are no guarantees that the candidate who looks so good on paper will be as good of an employee in real life, try using non-traditional job interview questions to help bring out the answers that will help you assess your candidates on a different level.

Candidates often worry about non-traditional interview questions, which can seem like their only purpose is to put someone on the spot or trick them. But there is a method to their madness. Here are 5 non-traditional interview questions and the reasons behind asking them.

  • “Where do you see yourself in five years? This is an icebreaker question that allows the interviewer to get a peek at the candidate’s true intentions. Use this question to find out what the candidate is seeking and if their expectations match the actual job role.
  • “Tell me about a time you were treated unfairly at work, and how was it resolved?” This question nudges most candidates outside of their comfort levels. However, those candidates who are true team players and work well with others should be able to explain how being treated “unfairly” actually provided an opportunity to take responsibility and end up with a positive outcome. Candidates who take a victim stance are not what you are looking for.
  • “What’s the most adventurous or risky thing you’ve ever done?” While this may seem like a loaded question, it’s actually a good way to identify candidates who enjoy getting the most out of life in their personal life as well as at the office. Those who lead active lives are most likely to be proactive at work.
  • “If you could be any superhero for a day, who would you be?” While this question may seem to come completely out of left field, it can help you see a clear division between great and so-so candidates. The best candidates will be able to logically explain why being a superhero would be beneficial to mankind. And the stronger the powers of the superhero, the more powerful the job candidate sees himself.
  • “What are the first three things you do at work in the morning?” This is a fun question, but it has a purpose. Since much of the workday requires planning and prioritizing, what a candidate does first thing in the morning at work is actually very important. The best candidates will generally respond by explaining the use of a calendar system to stay on top of tasks, or getting the most important things done first as a priority.

Asking non-traditional interview questions allows you to observe a few things about your candidate pool: How comfortable are they with unexpected questions – can they think on their feet and not panic? Are they creative? Can they roll with the punches and maybe have a bit of fun in a stressful situation? All of these are good qualities to have in an employee, and you might not dig deep enough to find these qualities with straightforward, traditional interview questions.
