What nursing trends do you see?

Nurses, CNAs and caregivers are at the forefront in caring for patients on a daily basis and are considered the backbone of the healthcare system. Industry experts are predicting a promising decade for those in nursing careers and it’s one trend that’s not expected to go away anytime in the near future. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for nurses, CNAs and caregivers is expected grow at least 18 percent between now and 2018.

Driving the demand for tens of thousands of nursing jobs are aging baby boomers, who are living longer but not necessarily healthier. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2050 the American population of elderly is expected to grow to 21 percent. Nursing trends show more hospitals are turning to specialized care workers and staffing agencies that employ nurses to maintain nurse-patient ratios. Here are three things that will affect trends in the coming year.

1. CompetitionDespite the need for thousands of jobs, registered nurses fresh from school are meeting resistance from hospitals that don’t want to hire new grads. Many experts say part of the problem is they need seasoned nurses to face the challenges of the hospital world. Mix that with the fact that as the economy continues to improve, and experienced nurses who have been deferring retirement will finally retire from the workplace, it leaves a predicted nursing shortage. On the positive side of this, the competition will ensure that only the best, most qualified people are hired by hospitals, which will benefit the entire healthcare industry. On the negative side, not everyone who wants to be a nurse will be hired due to the increased competition.

2. The Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) – The Affordable Care Act initiative to make healthcare coverage available to everyone will have a significant effect on the future of providers, not just on nursing trends.  The Affordable Care Act, along with the move away from fee-for-service payment by insurance companies, is fueling reimbursement approaches that emphasize more accountable care. New research indicates that new primary care models using nurse practitioners and physician assistance to reach out to patients could “eliminate” the scarcity of primary-care doctors.

3. Technology – Nursing trends also include the technology boom in hospitals. New gadgets and technologies are being developed that could change the way healthcare staffs work. This can be blessing, but it may make things more challenging for those in the field. Nursing staffs will have to learn how to use the new tools opening up a door for more training.

As the health care industry continues to move forward, nursing trends may be challenging. However, hospitals can meet those challenges head on if we know how things may be trending. This is an opportunity for healthcare workers to continue to improve and provide the best care possible.
