On the Job: Creating a Work-Life Balance

July 30th, 2014

“The idea that everyone needs to work frantically to meet people’s needs is just not true.” – Larry Page, Google The concept of a work-life balance has always existed; however, the most recent generation to join the workforce is insistent on it. Millennial employees are determined to work for a company that understands that they are not just cogs in a machine producing product, but instead, real people who have lives outside of work. work life balance While some businesses have taken to the four-day work week to allow for more personal time, others have simply started incorporating “development periods” to ease the stress of five day work weeks. Targetprocess is one of these. CEO Michael Dubakov has created a program that allows employees to devote the last day of the week to development activities. He calls it “Orange Fridays.” His employees use this day to participate in online courses, read articles or try out new things that they have an interest in. Some even, “form development teams and work on various products like mobile apps and games,” says Dubakov. “It is time during the week that people can dedicate to learning or interesting projects that they normally wouldn’t have time to do.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Bad Boss Series, Part 1: 10 Personality Traits of a Great Boss

July 1st, 2014

No one in a leadership position steps into an office and thinks, “I’m going to be a really terrible boss.” In fact, most of the time, leaders start out with great intentions to improve overall management and build a strong team. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always go as planned and frustration, miscommunication and unmet expectations turn good intentions into a “bad boss” reputation.

The truth is that being a great boss requires some strong personality traits. While everyone certainly has their own unique personality, it’s critical to adopt some new traits that will help you become a boss that shows excellent leadership and management skills. Watch your head

10 Personality Traits of a Great Boss

1. Honesty

No one appreciates being lied to, especially by someone they look up to or who is in a leadership position. Be honest with your employees, even if the truth stings a bit.

2. Positive Thinking

A lot of bosses have the tendency to think negatively and be pessimistic about the details. That method of leadership only leads to a negative atmosphere where fear is the driving force. Use the power of positive psychology to create a cheerful atmosphere.

3. Inspirational

All employees need inspiration. Be that inspirational leader that encourages them to push past their limits and execute their passions.

4. Delegation

You know when to leave your employees alone. Don’t be tempted by micromanagement.

5. Balanced

It’s important to have a great work and life balance. Maintain one for yourself and allow employees to do the same.

6. Humble

As a manager, you are there to help your team succeed. Give credit where credit is due and step out of the spotlight.  Read the rest of this entry »

Staffing Agency vs. Career Site: 3 Myths Debunked

April 1st, 2014

As a staffing agency, we understand what it’s like to be frustrated when it comes to applying for jobs. The continuous cycle of selling yourself on different career sites and hardly ever hearing back is not an encouraging process. Unfortunately, many people give in to the popular myths about working with a staffing agency and shy away from help, leading them to a career site that doesn’t quite deliver. Here are three of the most popular myths about staffing solutions, followed by the proper debunking of such tales.

Are you using the right resources to find a job?

Are you using the right resources to find a job?

Myth #1: A staffing agency does not provide “real” jobs.

Here at Josephine’s Professional Staffing, we provide opportunities in many different fields including administrative, accounting/finance, engineering and more.

These are not all temporary jobs either. Our clients have developed budgets which allow for a certain number of full-time employees per year, and we get you into their field of vision. If you begin working for them on a temporary basis and a new job opens up, you are in prime position to snag it.

Myth #2: A staffing agency only provides low-paying jobs.

Actually, it’s the complete opposite! If you have experience, are educated and have the attitude and personality that a client is looking for, you will be offered a job that compliments your caliber of work. It is more common in a career site to find only entry-level jobs or positions that are way outside of your experience, leaving you frustrated and discouraged.

Myth #3: A staffing agency is only looking for entry-level candidates.

So many companies are now looking to staffing agencies to bring them high-level candidates who are experienced and specialized in a field. If you are looking to get your foot in the door at a high-end company, using a staffing agency (and not a career site) will put you in prime position to be hired.

It is possible to obtain the dream job you’ve been looking for, and it’s a much faster (and straighter) path with the help of a staffing agency instead of a career site. We would love to help you get started on your journey!

September 24th, 2013
How could a staffing agency help you?

How could a staffing agency help you?

Did you know that according to the American Staffing Association, 2.91 million people are employed by staffing agencies every business day? Staffing agencies are literally bringing quality companies and exceptional employees together for business success and growth by the millions. We all have been there and  experienced the long, grueling and sometimes disappointing process of job hunting. Boosting your LinkedIn profile and scrolling through endless job postings on Monster or  Craigslist, will only get you so far. In this blog post we will introduce 3 reasons any hopeful, budding professional should utilize staffing agencies to land the job of their dreams.

They are:

1.      Access to expert professional advice: It is no secret that the current job market is intimidating and that the difference between a job offer and a missed opportunity could lie in the small details. Staffing agencies can provide valuable resources and advice to job seekers in regards to resumes/CVs, cover letters, salary negotiation tips and personal interview preparation, just to name a few. These resources are not  available via job board postings.

2.     Temporary assignments or full time opportunities: With the current state of the economy, full time jobs are the most sought after, and while staffing agencies place employees into full time positions, many also specialize in temporary assignments. In fact, did you know that 79% of staffing agency-placed employees work full time? It is also not uncommon for temporary staffing employees to be permanently hired on if a company is impressed with their overall performance.

3.     Reap the benefits of strong professional relationships: Staffing agency professionals network for a living; the success of their work depends on the relationships that they build with each potential employer. Working with a staffing agency will grant you access to these networks and will allow you to explore opportunities that you would not have discovered otherwise.

These three benefits are only a handful of the reasons why an up and coming professional should utilize a staffing agency like Josephine’s Professional Staffing. To learn more about our various employment services, contact us, today!

Certified as Small Business and Minority Woman Owned since 1988

Staffing agencies have been around for several years, but do you know the history behind how the staffing industry got started? Its inception may surprise you and the changes through the years have been many. Even though Josephine’s Professional Staffing opened its doors 25 years ago this year, the very first staffing agency was started here in California over a hundred years ago. Katherine Felton was born in Oakland, the daughter of prominent Oakland mayor and judge, Brooks Felton, whom the city of Felton, near Santa Cruz, was named after. Katherine created the first staffing agency to solve the problems and needs brought on by the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. Among many other hats, Katherine quickly became the head of the social service efforts to restore people’s way of life prior to the natural disaster.   Read the rest of this entry »
